PADI Freediver Instructor Crossover

In 2015 PADI has launched an interesting teaching system which facilitates to promote freediving worldwide. As a Freedive Instructor of any other agency you can apply for the cross-over course with Freedive Flow. Two days and you are there!

These are the current requirements for you to become a PADI Freediver Instructor:

  • have a qualifying freediving instructor certification
  • are at least 18
  • have a current medical (signed by a physician)
  • be an EFR Instructor (or have first aid/CPR instructor-level training with another organization),

You can complete the PADI Freediver Instructor Orientation with us to qualify as PADI Freediver Instructor. Depending on your credentials from your certifying agency you can also qualify as PADI Advanced or Master Instructor.

Note that at Freedive Flow we do not allow any form a breath manipulation before holding your breath. If your Instructor Trainer can hear you breathing (except when taking the One Full Breath or performing Recovery Breaths) you will not be allowed to dive. This excludes for example all techniques of prolonged exhalations and breathing patterns (2:4, 4:8 or “full breath cycles”). At Freedive Flow we focus on relaxation before freediving by application of a relaxation technique like the body scan or attention deconcentration.

Crossover for PADI Scuba Instructors

As a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you must be PADI Advanced Freediver certified (or have a qualifying certification) and be a current EFR Instructor to apply for the PADI Freediver Instructor Course. As successful candidate you will be able to teach the first two levels of the PADI freedive system; the PADI Basic Freediver and the PADI Freediver course.

However, at Freedive Flow we recommend to chose a different path. We believe that you need to be an accomplished freediver before signing up to a freedive instructor course. Your body and mind require training in various conditions, disciplines & situations to reach your targets in a safe and healthy way. Teaching freediving can – and will be at times – physically and mentally challenging. This cannot be achieved in four course-days, which is the minimum total course duration for a PADI Advanced certification. Further, teaching freediving asks for a different set of skills, procedures and safety requirements than teaching scuba diving.

At Freedive Flow we have a core-focus on these essential skills! In our experience it takes several weeks of training to become a reliable, top-notch freediver that is ready to take responsibility for students.

Hence, we encourage you to start teaching freediving only after

In all cases, before you consider applying to the freedive instructor course we suggest you can comfortably fulfill the performance requirements outlined above (see “The PADI Crossover Content at Freedive Flow”).
